Good question Pies. They actually did have planes and ships BOMBARED THE HELL OUT OF THE BEACH (and thats still an understatement) for an hour but they never hit the entrenched Germans due to poor precision and underestimating the extent of German fortifications. To make it worse they tried, at first, to assault the beach in the morning (hoping for low visibility and surprise) but they also forgot about low tide which left even less room for cover around a near coverless environment.
