Laserdiscs have a continuous spiral track made of pits and lands, in which is encoded the composite video (luminance, chrominance & Sync) and analog audio (one or two channels) using frequency modulation. It can have also a PCM digital audio track (redbook), or a DTS track, but the video is always analog.

Then is there different types of bumps on the disk surface or is it a smooth track or how is it read?

Being read by a laser doesn't mean that it have to be digital.Laserdiscs are analog. |
